Today, the United States of America celebrates its 237th day of independence from Great Britain. While Americans all over the world reflect on the over 200 years of democratic liberty they enjoy, we at Women’s World Banking would like to encourage everyone to spend a few minutes to think about the significance of economic opportunity to the continued prosperity of the country. This is not an opportunity enjoyed by most of the rest of the world.
Women’s World Banking has been working for over 35 years to make sure that low-income women–the population that least enjoys access to economic opportunity–gets that chance through financial products and services that are tailored specific to their needs. Financial inclusion is an essential step to personal liberty, particularly for women. It may not be the only step, but it is crucial if women are to achieve independence. Celebrate July 4th with a gift of economic freedom for women.
