Mission Drift: A Study of ADOPEM
This case study of ADOPEM explores the transformative journey of one institution, ADOPEM (Dominican Republic), as it evolved from an NGO into a regulated financial entity, becoming Banco ADOPEM. By examining both the benefits and challenges of this transformation, the study provides critical insights into the complexities of such transitions. Of particular significance to Women’s World Banking and its network members is how Banco ADOPEM has successfully balanced its dual objectives: maintaining financial sustainability while remaining steadfastly committed to its founding mission of empowering women through financial inclusion.
Historically, ADOPEM prioritized serving women, offering tailored financial products and services to address their unique needs. This mission-centric focus played a pivotal role in fostering economic empowerment and stability among women clients, often in underserved communities. Following its transformation, Banco ADOPEM has demonstrated that scaling operations and expanding its client base as a regulated entity does not have to come at the expense of its core values.
The bank has employed a series of innovative strategies to navigate potential mission drift. These include the development of gender-responsive financial products, targeted outreach campaigns to retain and attract women clients, and comprehensive staff training to ensure that its commitment to women remains at the heart of its operations. Additionally, its ability to align investor expectations with its social mission has been instrumental in achieving sustainable growth.
Banco ADOPEM’s experience underscores valuable lessons for the financial industry, particularly for institutions grappling with the pressures of commercialization and growth. It demonstrates that it is possible to expand responsibly while staying true to a mission of social impact. For Women’s World Banking and others in the sector, the success of Banco ADOPEM offers both inspiration and practical guidance on preserving mission integrity in an evolving financial landscape.
This case study serves as a resource for financial institutions, policymakers, and advocates seeking to promote inclusive growth. It highlights the importance of intentional strategies and stakeholder alignment in achieving a balance between profitability and social good.
